#401 Not authenticated, or Chat is not publicly available for this knowledge base

The key is missing, mistyped or revoked. Both messages mean the same thing: no valid key reached the API. Check the header is x-api-key and that your program reads the key from the environment it runs in. Keys are shown once — if you no longer have it, revoke it in Share → API and generate another.

#403 This API key is not valid for this collection

The collection id in the URL is not the collection the key was created for. Keys made on a collection's Share screen work for that collection only.

#403 Collection API keys cannot call this endpoint

Keys can read, ask, search and add or delete documents. Creating or deleting collections, changing fields or configuration, and managing sharing are done in the app. See API keys and permissions.

#The chat response is not JSON

Chat streams by default and the body is text/event-stream. Send "stream": false for a single JSON object, or parse the stream as shown in Streaming.

#400 Unsupported file type

The file's type is not one the collection reads (for example CSV or XLSX). Supported: PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown, HTML and common audio formats.

#400 about size, pages or characters

Direct uploads are limited to 5 MB, PDFs and Word files to 10 pages, and text files to 100,000 characters. Split long documents, or use an upload URL for files over 5 MB.

#A document stays in processing

Reading can take a few minutes for long or audio documents. If it has not finished after 15 minutes, delete it and add it again; if it keeps happening, report the object_id.

#A document ends failed

error_detail says why. Common causes: a scanned PDF with no text layer, an empty file, or audio with no speech.

#The answer misses a document I just added

Documents are searchable only once their status is completed. Wait for it before asking.

#Fields are empty in the table

A field is null when the document does not contain it, or when the document was read before you added the field. Check extraction_context in the table response for when each document's fields were extracted.

#429 quota errors

The collection owner's account reached a usage limit — often the 50 questions a day on a trial. Every key and the app share these limits. See Usage limits.

#Is there an MCP server?

Not yet. To use a collection from Claude or another AI agent today, define a tool that calls search or chat.
